The novel Murambi: The Book of Bones follows the stories of different people in Rwanda at the time of the genocide in April It is authored by the Senegalese journalist Boubacar Boris Diop, also a noted novelist. Written as part of a project headed by ten African authors to bring the events of the genocide into the mainstream, Murambi has been regarded as one of the most significant works covering the topic. The book is presented in four parts and is a fictionalized telling of the genocide perhaps most familiar to Americans as a result of the film Hotel Rwanda. Diop was born in Senegal which is, of course, on the other side of the African continent. Nevertheless, his assured hand reveals an author intimately familiar with the subject matter. The first and third parts of Murambi, Book of Bones present the true life horrific story through the fractured perspectives of multiple characters who are touched by the genocide in varied ways. Part one and part three follow the story of a Rwandan educator, Cornelius, as he returns home to the country following the terrible years which witnessed whole death and devastation of his homeland.

Murambi was born out of an initiative by African writers to commemorate and reflect upon the Rwandan genocide. In just days between April and July , close to 1 million people—mostly ethnic Tutsis—were killed in one of the bloodiest atrocities of the twentieth century.
