The James Bond literary franchise is a series of novels and short stories, first published in by Ian Fleming , a British author , journalist , and former naval intelligence officer. James Bond , often referred to by his code name, , is a British Secret Service agent; the character was created by journalist and author Ian Fleming , and first appeared in his novel Casino Royale ; the books are set in a contemporary period, between May and February Fleming went on to write a total of twelve novels and two collections of short stories, all written at his Jamaican home Goldeneye and published annually.

Fleming based the character on a number of people he knew who commanded sections of British intelligence. M has appeared in the novels by Fleming and seven continuation authors, as well as appearing in twenty-four films. Over the course of twelve novels and two collections of short stories, Fleming provided a number of details relating to M's background and character. M refers to it as "Infuriator" and tends only to drink it in moderate quantities unless he is in a very bad mood.
