Carl Hiaasen started writing with co-author Bill Montalbano, but when Montalbano took a job as a foreign correspondent, he went solo with novels such as Tourist Season , Native Tongue and Strip Tease. Carl Hiaasen is an American novelist who was born and raised in Florida. He started out as a journalist and columnist before embarking on writing novels during his spare time. Since then, he has authored and co-authored a collection of 30 novels and short stories. His adult fiction novels can be viewed as a series of unrelated stories considering the fact that although each one of them has a different plot and storyline, they have a recurring hero. Over his writing career, Hiaasen has managed to win multiple awards and achievements and at least one of his novels has been made into a movie. The same year saw his novel Skinny Dip get a nomination for the best novel in Dagger Awards.
Since Hiaasen has been writing a regular column, which at one time or another has pissed off just about everybody in South Florida, including his own bosses. Hiaasen began writing novels in early s with his good friend and fellow journalist, William D. Together they wrote three mystery thrillers — Powder Burn, Trap Line and Death in China — which borrowed heavily from their reporting experiences. His next effort, Double Whammy , was the first and possibly only novel ever written about sex, murder and corruption on the professional bass-fishing tour. All the novels are set in Florida, for obvious reasons.

Born and raised in Plantation, Florida, near Fort Lauderdale of Norwegian heritage, Hiaasen was the first of four children and the son of a lawyer, Kermit Odel, and teacher, Patricia. He married Connie Lyford just after high-school graduation and entered Emory University in , where he contributed numerous satiric pieces to the school newspaper, The Emory Wheel. In he transferred to the University of Florida, graduating in with a degree in journalism. Carl and Connie divorced in , and he married Fenia Clizer in He has one son from his first marriage and another from his second.
