The Best Graphic Novels for Children

In the world of kids books, graphic novels are so hot right now. For the unfamiliar, graphic novels are book length stories told with the visual support of a comic strip format. My ten year old is a big fan of graphic novels. She is a confident reader and a voracious consumer of all different genres of books, so while graphic novels are great for supporting struggling readers — the visuals providing important contextual support to help the reader decipher text and meaning — they are attractive to tweens within a vast range of reading levels. Similar to comic books, graphic novels weave rich, lively visuals with a limited amount of text to drive the narrative. They can be especially appealing to young readers who are reluctant to pick up a more traditional book. Graphic novels are a great way to help struggling readers strengthen vocabulary, build reading confidence and stamina, and develop a deeper appreciation of storytelling.

Graphic novels are great for "reluctant readers" and kids just learning to read. Perhaps more importantly, graphic novels tend to be more engaging than other "early reader" books.
