How to Start a Book Club

The secrets of running a successful book group

It brings me enormous pleasure! I am not a teacher or librarian but a parent. This led to a discussion with a child about his family history involving an exciting tale of how his grandfather escaped Nazi Germany! They provide a great monthly newsletter with suggestions for themes and activities. And I learnt just as much as the children did!

Chatterbooks is our network of children's reading clubs run in libraries and schools to encourage reading for pleasure. Chatterbooks clubs are run by library staff, teachers, teaching assistants and volunteers - people who are passionate about reading. You can use Chatterbooks clubs with any children, to help them with their confidence through talking about books, and to encourage them to read more widely. You can also work with targeted groups, for example to engage reluctant readers , to sustain reading recovery, with gifted and talented children, or to support transition from primary to secondary school. You need a meeting space, a session plan, and books for the children to borrow. We offer free downloadable activity packs each month, full of ideas to use in Chatterbooks sessions, plus recommended book lists on different themes. Each session should last a minimum of 40 minutes many Chatterbooks clubs meet for 1 to 1.

Book clubs for kids provide excellent opportunities for learning and imagination. Starting a book club is easy. Define the goals and structure of the book club, and select the ages of the children you want to participate.

Book Clubs : How to Start a Children's Book Club

We love these book club discussion questions for The Candymakers by Wendy Mass and this sweet and easy party menu. When I devoured The Read-Aloud Family last summer, my favorite tip from Sarah Mackenzie was to develop a book club environment for your kids. Reading is something meant to be enjoyed, if we want our kids to grow into avid readers, we need to celebrate the joy that comes with finishing a good book. Book club parties are not just for adults. Kids will absolutely love a book club party of their own!
