Surface Book 2 Review: That Special Something

The custom Nvidia graphics card in the new Surface Book isn't really intended for gaming, but don't let that stop you. One of the big selling points of Microsoft's new Surface Book laptop is that it offers an optional Nvidia graphics card in higher-end models. With a distinct lack of game-ready graphics hardware in most inch laptops, that immediately caught the attention of PC gamers. Of course, there were some caveats. First, the graphics hardware from Nvidia was installed in the system's keyboard base, meaning it couldn't be used when the screen was detached as a standalone tablet. In fact, if you try and detach the screen while the GPU is being used, you get a pop-up message telling you to close the offending application before the latch connecting the screen and base will release. Second, Microsoft and Nvidia were both very nonspecific about exactly what type of graphics hardware was in the system.

The Surface Book is a 2-in-1 PC designed and produced by Microsoft , part of the company's Surface line of personal computing devices. Surface Book is distinguished from other Surface devices primarily by its full-sized, detachable keyboard , which uses a dynamic fulcrum hinge that expands when it is opened. The keyboard contains a second battery , a number of ports and an optional discrete graphics card used when the screen part, also dubbed as the clipboard by Microsoft, is docked to it. Contrary to Surface Pro devices, which are marketed as tablets , the Surface Book is marketed as a laptop , Microsoft's first device marketed as such. When unveiling the Surface Book to the press, Panos Panay, corporate vice president for Surface Computing at Microsoft, initially presented the device as being a laptop using part of a promotional video which shows the screen remaining attached to the keyboard base and positioned it as a competitor to the MacBook Pro , before revealing its true nature as a hybrid device by showing the rest of the video where the screen is revealed as detachable and compatible with the Surface Pen. The Surface Book's design was influenced by a goal to design a 2-in-1 convertible tablet that could be folded like a laptop, and not require the keyboard to be heavier than the tablet portion in order to support and balance the tablet portion.

The Microsoft Surface Book 2 is poised as the ultimate Surface machine. Not the Type Covers usually paired with Surfaces, but its own custom made dock which houses the keyboard and the extra hardware to make it into a full-fledged multimedia notebook. While past Surfaces like the Surface Pro 2 have dipped their toes in trying to do more than your usual office tasks, none of them have been particularly well equipped for multimedia work as the Surface Book 2. Notice, that while other Surfaces are geared towards office productivity, the Surface Book 2 is a step above. The hardware is certainly representative of that, being beefier and faster than previous incarnations of the device. Certainly the dock portion could have been fitted with one. Alas, neither are on the machine, which is a misstep in my opinion.
