"Best of" Lists
Oh, sigh. I considered breaking it up into time periods but decided instead to make it gigantic. Some of these books are on other lists , but others are new titles. Frankly, I was just too overwhelmed to write blurbs on all of them! Leave me your recommendations for other parts of the world, so I can put them on my reading list! I occasionally get requests to be more forthcoming with age recommendations for books. I tend to resist that a little bit but I will say that many of these books deal with difficult subjects and parents may want to look at the books closely if they have concerns.
Which is why reading coming-of-age books becomes very relevant at this age. Kids this age are also highly influenced by friends, wanting more independence from parents, and making improvements in their abstract thinking abilities. Preteens need good books that both resonate with their complex lives as well as educate and entertain them. Fantasy, magic, and horror provide tech-free escapism for kids. Kids love to imagine themselves as the main characters, especially in kids-can-do-anything adventure and mystery stories like these selections. Readers will connect with the struggles of daily life and growing up.
If you ask two of my kids, the answer is historical fiction, and I agree with them! Historical fiction is awesome! There is something about a great historical fiction book.
