‘Book Club’ Movie Review: Four Screen Legends, ‘Fifty Shades,’ One Bad Film – Rolling Stone

I asked Janet Webb to share some of her thoughts after just seeing Book Club for the first time. She shares them here:. Who was my favorite couple? I thought Don Johnson was his usual delightful roguish self—I adored him. The thing is, she was so much more vulnerable and honest with her girlfriends: it took her so long to let down her guard with Don that it was a bit too late.

Fifty Shades of Grey - Destiny's Book Club

Diane Keaton and Jane Fonda Hilariously Review 'Fifty Shades of Grey' (Exclusive)

By Tori Preston Film May 18, Also — and this is an odd complaint for a comedy about women in their sixties reading 50 Shades of Grey but bear with me on this — the photoshop is terrible. Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen are famous women, with decades of photographic documentation available in order to construct convincing fake photos of them in their fictional past as friends. I realized this when I walked into my screening today and saw it full of older women. I mean, I was the youngest person there by at least 30 years, and everyone around me was having a blast. Which makes sense, because part of what makes Book Club so disappointing is that it actually does a number of things surprisingly well.

We have a big love for all things Fifty Shades and have taken delight in the books as well as the movies and are slightly obsessed with the film's stars, too. We've watched the whole saga of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele and eaten up every sexy second. And now, a new movie is coming out with a whole lot of inspiration from Fifty Shades of Grey. The next chapter is always the best chapter! Link in bio.

Read Peter Travers' review. Four female friends think they can spice up their book club, and maybe their love lives, by wallowing in the kinky prose of E. Until, that is, you see what debuting director Bill Holderman and his cowriter Erin Simms have concocted for this quartet of greats. Some may feel like this smirking sex farce goes down easy. Vivian Fonda runs a hotel and has a stable of studs to choose from.

We've never seen something quite like it, and Book Club , which also stars Diane Keaton , Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen, dives fully into the phenomenon. The premise is simple: Four mature, accomplished women in California meet for a weekly book club in which they usually stick to highbrow fare and pinot grigio until Fonda's character, the Blanche Devereaux of the group, decides to spice things up by introducing the girls to Christian Grey with a stack of Fifty Shades of Grey books. Despite some early protests on intellectual grounds, the women all quickly find themselves absorbed in the steamy tome. Of course, fandom for E. James' book serves as a springboard for the women reinvigorating their own sex and love lives later in life in a series of episodes involving online dating, swan-shaped pool floats and, naturally, some Viagra mishaps.

The Internet was beside itself: What did we do to deserve this photo? Where did Diane get that turtleneck? How do we get an invite to this book club? That means their fans may not get an invite to the next meeting, but they will get to find out for themselves what it would be like if they did. The premise is that Keaton, Steenburgen, Fonda, and Bergen are four longtime friends whose love lives are all in varying stages of disarray — from a divorce to a stale marriage to a longtime singleton. They choose the tale of Ana and Christian for their next book club read, in hopes that their BDSM chronicles will kick-start a few things that need, well, kick-starting. Clearly, the selling point for audiences is the chance to sit back and enjoy a blissful plus minutes watching a bunch of fancy women drink wine, eat cheese, and talk about Christian Grey.
