Star Wars Is Poised to Re-Make One of the Expanded Universe's Biggest Mistakes

The Yuuzhan Vong —" Children of Yun-Yuuzhan ", also called the Chosen Race , known to the Chiss and Ferroans as the Far Outsiders , and sometimes incorrectly abbreviated to Vong which implied that one was disowned by their family and their gods —were a sentient species that nearly destroyed the New Republic , and were responsible for the deaths of nearly trillion sentient beings during their invasion of the galaxy. The Yuuzhan Vong and their Chazrach slaves were among the few alien species known to originate outside the galaxy the only known others being the Silentium and the Abominor. A typical Yuuzhan Vong resembled a Human in form, though they were taller and heavier than the average Human and had less hair on their heads. The Yuuzhan Vong were religious zealots, who viewed mechanical technology as blasphemy. Their technological innovations were genetically engineered and purely organic. Additionally, the Yuuzhan Vong deeply respected pain to the point of masochism, and strove to improve their physical capabilities through organ grafting. Such grafting was a status symbol within Yuuzhan Vong society.

The New Jedi Order Discussion

Star Wars: The New Jedi Order – Legends Series

The Yuuzhan Vong War 25 — 29 ABY , also known as the Great War by the Yuuzhan Vong , was a pan-galactic conflict which arose when the Yuuzhan Vong, a warlike species which had long ago fled the destruction of its own galaxy , invaded the galaxy. After several decades of preparations, scouting and provocations, the Yuuzhan Vong entered the galaxy at a point codenamed Vector Prime and swiftly conquered much of the Outer Rim. Chief of State Borsk Fey'lya 's ill-prepared and inefficient New Republic government was unable to prevent the extra-galactic species from driving inexorably toward the Core. Coruscant , the galactic capital, was conquered and remade by the invaders two years after the invasion had commenced, by which time countless species had been rendered extinct and entire planets were now uninhabitable. Using advanced biotechnology in every field of life, the Yuuzhan Vong were masters of adaptation and subterfuge, as well as brute force and terror tactics. The beliefs that the invasion was divinely ordained and that the galaxy was theirs by right were reinforced by Supreme Overlord Shimrra Jamaane and the priest caste , the conduits to the gods all Yuuzhan Vong worshiped. Thus the species attacked with ferocity, their invasion stalling only once the fleet, under command of Warmaster Tsavong Lah , had overextended itself.

The chapters are divided across two eras; one during the last days of the Clone Wars, revealing Thrawn's first encounter with Jedi Master Anakin Skywalker, and the second is in the Imperial era. The two stories weave together, revealing a dangerous threat looming in the depths of the Unknown Regions. The Grysks have been watching the galaxy for decades, considering when it is best to act, and actually believed themselves powerful enough to plot an invasion when the Empire was at its height. Long-term Star Wars fans will find some of the ideas surprisingly familiar; as Zahn has set up the Grysks, they could work as a canon replacement for an alien race from the old Star Wars "Legends," the Yuuzhan Vong. Until the late '90s, the license to publish Star Wars novels had sat with Bantam.

The series revolves around the Yuuzhan Vong invasion of the galaxy 21—25 years after the events depicted in Return of the Jedi. The Jedi Knights, reduced in number to only a handful, were slowly restored, primarily under the leadership of Luke Skywalker. With the reboot of the franchise after Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm, the whole New Jedi Order was reclassified as non-canon. The series begins twenty-one years after the Rebel Alliance destroyed the second Death Star. The New Republic is facing internal conflict while trying to maintain peace. A new, powerful enemy, known as the Yuuzhan Vong , emerges from the outer galaxy, beginning what will be known as the Yuuzhan Vong invasion.
