I Am Mixed by Garcelle BeauvaisWhen actress Garcelle Beauvais first arrived in Massachusetts from Haiti, it was the first time she felt different from those around her. Beauvais is drawing on that experience and that of raising three children, including bi-racial twin boys, in the first of a series of children's books entitled "I Am Mixed. Like Beauvais' twins, "I Am Mixed" tells the story of siblings Jay and Nia as they explore the thoughts and emotions of being of mixed ethnicities. What I wanted most of all is for them to be proud of who they are and celebrate themselves. Read more of her interview with Elizabeth St. US Edition U.

Layers of Love for I Am Mixed. You are walking into a mystical fantasy land of wonder and amazement and all this sweet wonder is what makes up the mixed twins. I love the way this book presents a world view of cultural combinations. She was just more attached to the boy twin who looks very similar to her. There are so many cultures represented in this book that I could imagine a child with Sub-Saharan African, Caribbean, English, NorthAmerican, Cuban, Mexican, Haitian, or Chinese cultures in their home, all finding their relatable representation of themselves in these pages. At the end of the book, there is a straightforward explanation of what it is to be mixed.
