Returning items – University of Reading

You can borrow a wide range of material from the Library using the self-service machines located on level 3. You will need your University ID card to borrow items. When the Library is open, items should be returned using the self-service machines or, in case of further queries, to the Help Desk. Staff and researchers have three return dates: end of semester 1, end of Semester 2 and end of summer vacation. Distance learners, part-time students and students with extended loans arranged via the Counselling and Disability Service can borrow long loan items for 6 weeks and week loan items for two weeks.

Books must be returned by the due time or the due date to the Library from which they were borrowed. Overdue books will incur fines. The due date or time for a book is on the receipt from the self-issue machine or stamped on the date label in front of the book. Standard Loan books and Short Loan books have a 1 day 'grace period' after the due date during which fines will not be incurred. If the item is returned after the grace period, fines are incurred for that whole period.

Standard loans can be renewed at the end of the academic year as long as they are not required by another reader. The date given at the point of issue or renewal is the official notification of when they are due back. If you are unable to renew your books, please contact the Library. Books can be returned to any site excluding the Learning Commons and The John Rylands Library regardless of the site from which they were borrowed. You can now also return books using the book return boxes located in the Students' Union, Owens Park and Ellen Wilkinson building. You can return books from any library using the boxes but please note that they will not be removed from your account immediately.

If you return a book late and it has been requested by another library user you will be subject to an overdue charge. You will also be charged.

There are self-service machines at all libraries. To borrow using self-service machines you will need your UCard. Most 7 day loan books can be borrowed for the duration of a vacation known as a vacation loan. If you take a book on vacation loan you will not be required to return it until a set date, even if it is requested by another library user. The date that 7 day loan books switch to vacation loan is advertised by the library in advance; this is usually a week before the last day of term. All library users are eligible for vacation loans.
