When she has to get to Midway in a hurry after a visit with her aunt in Hawaii, she gets on the next cargo flight at the last minute. She knows the pilot, but on this flight, there's a new co-pilot named Max. All systems are go until a storm hits during the flight. The only passenger, Robie doesn't panic until the engine suddenly cuts out and Max shouts at her to put on a life jacket. They are over miles of Pacific Ocean.
Raft a short story by Stephen Baxter Foreword The short story 'Raft' came from a throwaway piece of speculation I read on the fine-tuning of physical parameters in our universe. If gravity were a little stronger, stars would be smaller and would burn out more quickly It was always too big an idea to cram into a short story; I had to wrestle it down from 10, word early drafts. And even after it was published, in Interzone , my mind wouldn't let go of the scenario, coming up with fresh wrinkles on the central conceit. When I started to think about a first novel, the universe of 'Raft' was an obvious place to return to, and the story is now a very rough sketch of what the novel became.
