Panda Ray is a rare beast: a fun and weird adventure for young adults where there is no Chosen One. Thank God. Chris Zimmerman is an alien, or possibly a mutant. His mother finds out and is furious, because those trips are family secrets.

It was a great year in speculative young adult publishing, with several excellent series reaching their satisfying conclusions. In the conclusion to the Falling Kingdoms series, the fight for Mytica rages on, bringing destruction across the empire. Tess of the Road handles a difficult topic with compassion and care, a beautiful start to a new duology. When the dead rise on the battlefields at Gettysburg, the American civil war is derailed as the nation scrambles to protect itself, deciding to sacrifice children it deems expendable in the war on the undead. But until the borders are impenetrable, she cannot be satisfied.

We thought it was best to keep our picks appropriate for the age range first and foremost and then go from there. For instance, some people deem Huckleberry Finn inappropriate , because of its use of racist slurs. Interestingly enough, some estimates say adults make up half of YA readership. So, why would the publisher risk their reputation of age appropriate, mass market YA literature? Also, YA is its own genre, which means it has its own cliches, tropes, and so on that readers and writers both use or avoid for intentional artistic choices.
