This, then, is what it means to marry in Christ: spiritual marriage is like spiritual birth, which is not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh. See how he does not despise physical unity, however, but uses spiritual unity to illustrate it! How foolish are those who belittle marriage! If marriage were something to be condemned, Paul would never call Christ a bridegroom and the Church a bride, and then say this is an illustration of a man leaving his father and his mother, and again refer to Christ and the Church. Tell [your wife] that you love her more than your own life, because this present life is nothing, and that your only hope is that the two of you pass through this life in such a way that in the world to come you will be united in perfect love. Then we will be perfectly one both with Christ and each other, and our pleasure will know no bounds.

Marriage was ordained by God as a blessing to the human race. From the beginning, God in His providence planned this union of man and woman. There is no relationship between human beings as close as that of husband and wife — if they are united as they ought to be. If a man and a woman marry to satisfy their sexual appetites, or to further the material aims of themselves or their families, then the union is unlikely to bring blessings. But if a man and a woman marry in order to be companions on the journey from earth to heaven, then their union will bring great joy to themselves and to others.

Chrysostom, we should here note, was swept up in a larger ascetic movement that reached its peak in the late fourth century; in other words, his writings on marriage and virginity at this point reflect the times. In both cases, marriage is described in bleak terms for the purpose of comparing it to the much loftier, more noble state of virginity. Following his ordination to the priesthood in , he assumed preaching duties. We see this most clearly in his Homily 12 on Colossians , likely preached during his time as bishop of Constantinople in the s. For Chrysostom, sex is viewed positively within the bonds of marriage. In sexual intercourse, Chrysostom argues, two become one, as if each person were finally becoming complete.
