Indeed, his personality had much to do with his own success as a therapist, together with his extraordinary care for verbal suggestion techniques: he took permanent delight in the richness and rhythms of the English language. He thought later that he owed much to 30 years' experience in general medicine practice in West Bromwich, in the heart of the 'Black Country' of the English industrial Midlands, among a people for whom he felt great affection. His commitment to psychiatry came, however, from frustration at being denied the opportunity to leave general medicine. This was in when at the outbreak of war he volunteered for the Royal Navy.
