With the advent of new and powerful techniques in molecular genetics, the family study approach has become an increasingly important method of exploring the causes and mechanisms behind a wide variety of common, complex diseases. Foremost among these disorders are psychiatric illnesses, including alcoholism, and, to a lesser extent, other substance addiction. Although many such disorders are known to aggregate within families, how they are transmitted and how environmental factors interact with inborn traits to cause the illnesses is not yet known.
