Like virtually all works that can be said to occupy the tragic genre, Romeo and Juliet wrestles with philosophical notions of fate, fortune, and determinism. Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet are initially framed as "star-cross'd lovers," and "death-mark'd," in the play's opening verse.
