Jake & Dinos Chapman

This exercise is a prelude to compositional architecture — and by this I mean architecture that systematises several project scales — which can only be achieved via the exact opposite. A non-compositional exercise excludes all types of programme, bonds with the city and design reflections except for imposing rules that must be correctly applied. So we are faced with particular drawings and models that have lost or never had a prescriptive function and that are primarily drawings and models of things in which a, more or less knowingly accepted, idea of a thing is easily developed The fact that even the title of these drawings is a reference to a painting a painting by Frank Stella shows that it is vital for architects to experience the other arts and to look to painting and the image as a place in which to form their own concept of world. We must not forget that the key action of human knowledge is to find the way in the face of chaos by positioning images and signs.

With artists Jake and Dinos Chapman there are certain things you should expect not to expect: nuance, subtlety, taste. Like one of the humours in a Ben Jonson comedy, its heroine rejoiced in the totally amusing name of Chlamydia Love. It was no such thing, of course. The hotel was a shack, the jungle dense and dangerous, and there was an all-pervasive stench, emanating perhaps from the script. Rhys Ifans stars. The drama plodded through the sniggersome playbook of late-period Ken Russell think The Lair of the White Worm : suppurating lesions, all manner of maggots and molluscs, and of course a talking toilet bowl. The twaddlesome fantasies spun by the pink duchess of drivel Barbara Cartland and indeed thwacky language-mangler EL James richly merit every kicking that comes their way.

About M HKA / Mission Statement

H ere we have a true cinematic oddity, in every sense. Originally conceived as a feature film, eventually realised as a four-part TV series which Sky Arts are currently mid-way through broadcasting , this adaptation by Jake Chapman of his own novel has now been cut together as a single entity for international release. Hence the screening that the Edinburgh film festival managed to secure is likely to be a one off, at least as far as UK filmgoers are concerned. The record of YBA interaction with film has been pretty spotty — Steve McQueen: good; Tracey Emin: not so good — but Chapman has put together something that is very distinctive and pretty impressive. Be that as it may, this feature cut certainly retains something of the four-part structure, but the abrupt switches of locale only add to the disorienting mood that Chapman conjures up.

Book, Materials: ink, paper. Literary synopsis In his fiction debut, the notorious British artist Jake Chapman satirizes the standard paperback romance novel in his own inimitable way, slashing the genre down to bare bones and creating a disfigured version from the remains. A battle begins over the ownership of the island and, ultimately, Chlamydia's love. This is a peculiarly ambitious book that at first appears to center on the complex emotional life of its heroine.
