Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor, Paperback | Barnes & Noble®

Thank you! Seventeen-year-old Karou leads a double life: as an art student in Prague with normal boyfriend troubles—and as a runner of bizarre errands for Brimstone, a scarred and saturnine sorcerer with the head of a ram and the lower body of a dragon. With similarly chimerical associates, he has raised her from infancy and dispatches her through magic portals to destinations all over the world. Switching points of view and settings, Taylor then fills in a back story that links Akiva and Karou in an older tragedy, while planting seeds that might lead ultimately to peace. The plot hinges on major contrivances, but along with writing in such heightened language that even casual banter often comes off as wildly funny, the author crafts a fierce heroine with bright-blue hair, tattoos, martial skills, a growing attachment to a preternaturally hunky but not entirely sane warrior and, in episodes to come, an army of killer angels to confront. Since he was five years old he's been obsessed with the mythic lost city of Weep, but it would take someone bolder than he to cross half the world in search of it.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone Audiobook (Part #1) by Laini Taylor

Freaking amazing book. I didn't expect this to be this good.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone

This month sees the publication of Strange the Dreamer , first in a duology. Taylor spoke with PW from her home in Portland, Ore. Did you always know you wanted to be a writer? When I was a kid, books were always my favorite things. But what I called writing when I was in middle school was two things: crafting complicated worlds and crafting beautiful sentences. I loved language. I was fooling myself for a long time, world-building, noodling with language, but I was missing the crucial storytelling element.

Additionally, the novella "Night of Cake and Puppets" was published in , focusing on the protagonist's best friend and taking place in the timeline of "Daughter of Smoke and Bone. The trilogy follows Karou, a seventeen-year-old art student living in Prague and concerns an ancient war between Seraphim and Chimaera in a parallel universe. The series has received an array of nominations and awards, and a planned movie adaptation of Daughter of Smoke and Bone is under development. A seventeen-year-old Prague art student named Karou leads an interesting life: she has blue hair that grows from her head, speaks a variety of languages, has three bullets in her stomach, and has been raised by creatures with human and animal features called chimaera. These are Brimstone, with lion legs and ram horns; Issa, with a snake's lower body, hood, and fangs; Twiga, with a giraffe neck; and Yasri, with a parrot beak. Kishmish, a crow with bat wings, acts as a messenger from Brimstone to Karou. Karou is often sent on missions to gather teeth for Brimstone, although she does not know what they are used for and why there are certain rules such as "no baby teeth" and "no rotting".

Walking to school over the snow-muffled cobbles, Karou had no sinister premonitions about the day. It seemed like just another Monday, innocent but for its essential Mondayness, not to mention its Januaryness. The falling snow and the early hour conspired to paint Prague ghostly, like a tintype photograph, all silver and haze. On the riverfront thoroughfare, trams and buses roared past, grounding the day in the twenty-first century, but on the quieter lanes, the wintry peace might have hailed from another time. The occasional cheek-chew of bitterness when a pang of heartache intruded, as pangs of heartache will, but she pushed them aside, resolute, ready to be done with all that.

Meanwhile, a blue-skinned goddess girl and her supernaturally gifted companions walk the halls of an empty citadel, surviving on plums and rainwater. We talked with Taylor about her process, her reading list, and her fictional obsessions. Add to Bag. A character, an image, a line? That bumped into this other idea, about the unwanted, half-caste children of bad gods, and a story started to take shape.
