The absolute best way to learn is with a group of friends who already know the rules and can guide you through the learning curve. Well, don't worry. You can think of it a lot like a collective choose-your-own-adventure book. One player prepares a fantasy story of sorcery and adventure, then the rest of the players take charge of characters in that story and gather together—preferably around a kitchen table—to cooperatively tell the tale. Maybe the story you'll tell is a mystery. Maybe it follows the classic hero's arc. Or, heck, maybe the story is just thin window-dressing with a series of spectacular battles.
You need maybe three or four other nerds to play with, some pricey tomes full of numbers and tables, ample free time and several dice with as many as 20 sides. How will you decipher the ruleset? There are a few simple, concrete things you can do to get a game going. There, seasoned dungeon masters run ongoing adventures that new players can jump into. Getting immersed can be difficult around a dozen strangers in a public place. You will probably have to be the dungeon master and host the game.
Fancy being a flesh-eating lizard with a giant mulch hammer and a penchant for oblivion? A lute fiddling cat with a less-than-wordly patron that demands cursed artefacts? Roll yourself a Tabaxi warlock with a background in thievery and song. Or perhaps you would like to create your own cosmos for others to traverse; training to be a fabled Dungeon Master. The narrator-cum-referee known as the Dungeon Master reports all events and non-player dialogue, as well as playing the numerous enemies the party will encounter on their adventures.
