How This Indie Author Landed a Barnes & Noble Book Signing

Yes, the giant retailer sells almost million physical books a year and regularly conducts author events in its stores, but these book events seem to cater only to published authors. I successfully sold a number of books and gained loyal readers. In the end, my determination and patience paid off. Novice writers tend to be scared of how people will react to their work and are not too keen on taking the possibility of being rejected. Let go of your negativity and explore every opportunity to showcase your work with enthusiasm and determination despite the outcome. When you determine your location, contact the store to find out if it has upcoming author events on its calendar or if the store is willing to accommodate an event. Barnes and Noble has a section on their website for publishers and authors with specific instructions for how to be considered for an author event.

Becoming an award-winning independently published author took a lot more work than I had ever imagined. I'm no marketing mastermind. Some of it was pure luck in the beginning, but now I know the ropes. As writers we know how to tell a story and make people feel things with words, but for some writers, going out into the field and working with people can be scary. Luckily for me, I am not one of those writers. I am also an actor, so I'm comfortable with public speaking , schmoozing with people, and being the center of attention.

We depend on you to maintain knowledge of and comply with all safety standards for your products. All books will be considered for store placement based on subject matter and salability. We use the ISBN to track inventory and sales information.

The company has become the gold-standard-purveyor of books in America. I am also a writer of adult fiction. Right now, I am out promoting my new novel, the dog, published by Rabbit Publishers. They are serious about their work and they want to get the word out about it. I respect them. I liked each of them.

Needless to say, these book buyers are crazy-busy. Because these folks are so busy, you need to meet certain parameters for a book to be considered. For self-published authors, getting to these levels isn't easy. But remember, these levels — plus any momentum that may be gained by the in-store print presence — help build sales momentum toward potential attention from a major publisher if that's your goal. Of course, sales numbers don't tell the whole story, so even if your sales figures hit the minimums, it doesn't hurt to give your pitch a little help. Here's how:. Which means bringing a crowd into the signing.

I was a relative nobody beyond a blog that gets a million-plus page views per year , I had a not-so-unique storyline young writer goes on road trip to find new American Dream , and, of course, no one reputable or even disreputable had published the book. So the marketing strategy was a big blank. People would only see it online, through social media channels. No one was going to see it on the shelf in a store, flip it over, read the cover blurb, and buy it. Or could they?

  1. I'm no marketing mastermind or at least I wasn't when I started this whole self-publishing adventure. Getting your book into a retailer like Barnes & Noble can seem like a daunting and scary task. Are you ready to get your indie book on to Barnes & Noble's bookshelves?.
