How to Make a Bookcase into a Closet | HomeSteady

If you remember the closet we are putting the bookcase in was not really a closet anymore. The house stairway had a difficult turn and made it impossible for us to pre-assemble this bookcase and face frame in the shop. So we brought everything on site and assembled it on the floor. The face frame was assembled with biscuts and glue, then clamped and nailed to the bookcase frame. The bookcase was lifted into place. Note the plumbing clean out in the lower section of the case.

Built-In Bookcases & Cabinet Construction

The Mysterious Bookcase

If your books and photographs are still displayed on a couple of boards held up by a pile of bricks, here's some good news: It doesn't require a master carpenter, a workshop full of tools, and thousands of dollars to add built-in bookcases to your home. All it takes, essentially, is some sturdy veneer plywood and a circular saw. By laminating a series of short support pieces to a longer strip of wood you can create the appearance of thick boards that have been routed to accept shelves. Some solid-wood trim covering all the plywood edges hides your clever trickery, leaving you with a piece of furniture worthy of a great library. Traditionally, built-in bookcases are made with solid wood boards, carefully routed to make tight grooves that accept each shelf. But sawn lumber is expensive — enough oak for a 8-foot bookcase, for example, could run into thousands of dollars.

Books are heavy; stabilize shelving by locating studs for brackets or shelf-mounting hardware. Many homes lack a sufficient number of closets, but sometimes the opposite is true. Rather than let an unneeded closet sit empty, make it into a bookshelf to use the space efficiently. With all closet traces removed, including the door, rod and hardware, the inner walls become the bookcase sides for an open, exposed built-in-style shelving unit. Let the recessed area's depth dictate your shelves' depth.
