The sculptures were originally intended for use as bookends, but can also be used simply as decorative figurines. The pillars are seen during a scene in Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring. The bookends were designed by sculptor Mary Machlachlan, and produced by Sideshow Weta, the New Zealand workshop responsible for the special effects in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
