The Lightning Thief Summary

This fantasy novel follows the journey of twelve-year-old Percy Jackson as he learns that he is the son of Poseidon, the Greek God of the Sea, and is sent on a quest to retrieve Zeus's Master Bolt in order to prevent war between Zeus, Poseidon and Hades which could destroy all of Western Civilization. During a school field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Percy is attacked by his math teacher, Mrs. Dodds, who turns into a fury from the Underworld, but when Percy questions another teacher about the event, Mr. Brunner insists that there is no Mrs. With the school year over, Percy goes home to see his mother, Sally, who announces they are taking a trip to the beach. As Percy and Sally discuss Percy's father at the cabin, Grover, Percy's best friend who is revealed to be a satyr, arrives to warn them of approaching danger, so Sally urges the boys to her car so they can flee; however, on the drive, Sally's car flips, and as they walk through the words, she is attacked by a Minotaur and disappears.

Meet Percy Jackson. He is twelve years old, and he decides to tell us the story of his past year. On the first day of summer, just after his sixth-grade year, Percy discovers that something is wrong with him. Or rather, something is right with him. He learns that he is a half-blood: half-human, half-god.

Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is on the most dangerous quest of his life. Along the way, he must face a host of mythological enemies determined to stop him. Most of all, he must come to terms with a father he has never known, and an Oracle that has warned him of betrayal by a friend. Now Percy and his friends have just days to find the only magic item powerful to save the camp before it is overrun by monsters. The catch: they must sail into the Sea of Monsters to find it. Along the way, Percy must stage a daring rescue operation to save his old friend Grover, and he learns a terrible secret about his own family, which makes him question whether being the son of Poseidon is an honor or a curse. When Percy Jackson gets an urgent distress call from his friend Grover, he immediately prepares for battle.

For reasons unknown, he often finds himself in unique situations that get him kicked out of school.
