Peaks and Valleys – Actionable Books

I say in a good way, not critically. I think I was the only person in the US who thought the first was dumb. My husband gave it to me to read after he did, he loved it, and I was I passed on Peaks and Valleys because of my impression of the first one. I think I just don't go abstract enough for a parable to hit home, just sort of felt like I was reading a kids book. I think you're right, Joe.

Summary and Review of “Peaks and Valleys” by Spencer Johnson

He said it was a philosophy with skills—a way of looking at things and doing things that makes you calmer and more successful in good and bad times. You have a great few days at work, followed by a rough week. Why does life have so many ups and downs and what can you do about it? Spencer Johnson, author of Peaks and Valleys , believes that peaks and valleys in life, like their physical counterparts, are not only natural but should be encouraged. Johnson explains through a short parable the value in acknowledging that everyone has ups and downs. There is no shame in acknowledging that not every day is the best day ever.

John Dossett's crisp and polished delivery is a natural fit for Johnson's no-nonsense style of motivational storytelling. Dossett chooses to understate the pathos, projecting a tone of wistful contemplation instead of heavy drama. Both the story and the narrative within the story surround dialogue between a weary day-to-day corporate warrior and a seasoned sage who offers a broader perspective on our familiar notions of success, achievement and happiness. In light of the current economic climate, listeners will find the messages timely, even if the paradigm shifts may not seem especially original. As an added bonus, the audio book includes an interview with the author sharing how he strives to keep the public focused on his message instead of elevating him into a celebrity business guru.

In fact, it really could be said to be a book of great common sense. Oftentimes we make our problems in life much more complicated than they need to be. This book shows you how to stay positive and get out of bad times the valleys quicker, and how to hold on to your good times the peaks , longer.

The story starts with a young man who lived in a valley. The man was dissatisfied with everything in life, feeling as if his job and his personal life was never secure. The man lived a dull and boring life and longed to do something exciting to get away from this monotonous routine. At work, he could not hold on to a job for an extended period of time. On several occasions, he would look up and see the tall, magnificent peaks above him. Looking at the peaks felt peaceful and refreshing for the man. He longed to climb one of the peaks, although his friends and family opposed this.
